Narrative: Waiting In line For The Wii

The noise of the cash registers sounding everywhere. A distinct sound every time an item was swiped. Large lines all over, and people swarming for deals. Mobs were rushing to certain items before they sell it. It was the Friday after thanksgiving, and the stores were insane. At 2 Am there was a line at Best Buy that was 200 people in length. I was glad I had gotten my Nintendo Wii a week prior to this mess, or I might not have gotten it at all.

It was one week ago, and I found myself waiting in line since 2 Am with a group of fellow gamers. I was the 16th person in a line that kept growing and growing. There were 5 kids in line that I talked to while waiting. Three out of the five had actually graduated from the same school as I did. Those same three kids also intended to sell their acquired Wii on eBay, as did I if the price was right. I figured I could always pick up another one a few weeks later. One of the kids had a foot ball, so we started tossing it around at around 3:30. I learned quite fast that cold hands on a cold night while trying to catch a football is not the best thing to do. Eventually our fun ran out; the foot ball landed on the roof. All hope was not lost however. Someone had a glow in the dark Frisbee! At this point two other kids from the line joined it. Unlike the lines for the PS3, Wii fans weren’t being assholes about getting out of line. When we were done playing Frisbee, it was around 4:00. Only three more hours till we got our hands on the most wanted Nintendo console of the year!

We were back to sitting, with nothing to do. It was starting to get colder and colder, with a very, very light snow. So small that it could hardly be seen in the parking lot lights. More people were relaxing in their cars warming up, more and more often. Eventually the inevitable then happened; it started to snow harder, with big thick flakes. At first nobody thought it would amount to much, as it wasn’t sticking on the grass or the ground. Then slowly it started to stick on the grass, and everyone that was sitting down. The temperature combined with the wetness of the snow made for miserable conditions. We continued to joke and laugh despite the bad conditions. I joked that if I had Denny’s phone number, I’d call and ask them to make me some food. Someone called me on that, and randomly had Denny’s phone number in their cell phone. I called and ordered a grand slam, and they said it would be ready in 10 minutes. I quickly ran over there, asking others to save my spot in line. When I got back I gobbled the food up as if I hadn’t eaten for a day. The warm syrup tasted delicious on such a cold night. Combined with the running and the heat of Denny’s, I was warm, and ready for the Wii. There was only 1 hour and 30 minutes until we could get our hands on it.

Slowly people started picking up their lawn chairs, and folding them up. Shortly after that, the tents started to get disassembled, and the laptops put away. Everyone was now standing there anxiously awaiting the clocks to strike 7 AM. Employees were now starting to trickle in one by one. For some reason the line kept getting smaller; meaning everyone was getting closer to each other as if this would make the wait slower. At 6:30 an employee came out and we thought they were going to let us in early. However he just handed out tickets, which told us our line number. 15 minutes later the doors opened, and we all started to rush in to the warmth, but that didn’t last long. An employee made us all go back outside. Apparently Wal-mart doesn’t care about people waiting in line to buy their merchandise. At 7:00 we all started to get really antsy, and excited. We wondered why they hadn’t opened the doors yet, and if something was wrong. Two minutes later the door opened, and we were all led to the cash register and given a Wii one by one. We were allowed to opt in for games, controllers, batteries, and anything else we might need. Most chose Zelda as it was the most popular game. This is where the kid in front of me had a terrible experience. He swiped his credit card, and it came back declined! He swiped it again, starting to panic, but it had the same results. He remembered he had his debit card, but the account balance wasn’t high enough. He said he’d just overdraft the total, and eat the fees. That didn’t work either as it came back declined. Eventually the cashier gave him one hour to come back with cash. Lucky for him I guess. Eventually I got my Wii, and exited the store while laughing at all the people lined up at Best Buy which didn’t open until 9. I never did find out if the other kid in front of me managed to come back in time.

As the Wal-mart cashier checked me out, I couldn’t help looking back on this day and thinking it might have been a waste of time. Nintendo was really on top of the Wii launch, and there were many more each week. I guess it’s just important for a gamer to have his console on launch day. Heading back to my car, I looked at the empty sidewalk, and thought of all the fun I was having a few weeks ago at this very spot.

Persuasive: Which College Would You Choose

Depending on your chosen profession, Devry University is a great place to enroll at. The technical classes have the latest technical knowledge, and the odds of being placed in a proper job for your field are extremely high. Along with the above reasons, a lot of Devry’s non technical classes are web based, or have things on the web to make class easier. Devry University is definitely a great college for those of you who wish to proceed with a technical career.

Since Devry mostly specializes with technical students, that is their most up to date class. The technological field changes all the time. Each year a new evolutionary product comes out, that put previous gadgets out to pasture. It is imperative that the school of your choice maintain a liquid curriculum. Devry does just that. Even though technology advances extremely fast, humans don’t. This means that a lot of people still use things that are ten or more years old. Thus, it is also a necessity that a class would still educate its students on older technology. Devry classes appear to somehow incorporate the new stuff, along with the old. Since I’m a Devry student and able to see the curriculum, I can tell you we do still learn stuff from the Windows 1998 days. We’re also heavily educated on Windows XP, one of Microsoft’s latest versions of Windows. If you read some success stories at Devry’s website, you start to get a picture of the things you’re introduced to. “A telecommunications degree provides you with broad knowledge,” Jennings says. “I knew where to begin looking when I had issues with different technologies, whether it was a PBX system on the voice side, or a network, or an operating system. I had exposure to all of those things.” –Devry.com It’s a very balanced education, and it seems to be just right.

Despite Devry’s good track record for education, their job placement is a supreme reason to attend. If you’re a student, you will personally get a person assigned to you to help build character when applying for a job. They will work with you on how to present your resume, and even how and what to right on the resume. Not only is this available to you pre graduation, but it’s also available post graduation; forever. Devry is one of the only universities that can boast such a high percent of job placement. In fact, 90% of the graduates that were actively seeking a career were placed in their proper field within 6 months. Basically, if you’re even remotely trying to find a job, you’ll have absolutely no trouble finding one. Simply put, Devry’s career placement is superior to anything else.

In today’s busy times, not everyone has time for classes. Not only does Devry offer strictly online classes, but they offer semi-online. It has all the benefits of a real class, with all the conveniences of an online class. I took my math class in this fashion. First of, all the book for this class was an ebook, meaning it was online. This cuts down on book costs. Basically all tests and quizzes were taken on a website, under supervision of a teacher. However, practice exercises, learning, and homework could optionally be done at home. Of course you were still allotted hours a day in class if you needed a teacher’s assistance. Another online advantage to Devry is eCollege. Some classes put all your assignments and grades online. In one of my classes, even the homework is assigned online. This makes it easier to miss a day, and still turn in homework. Normally when given access to a school’s network, you’re given a space on their server to store files. This still holds true at Devry. However, they take it to a new level and offer an interface to download all your school files from anywhere with an internet connection. It makes it very easy to save stuff at school, and access it at home. Devry is definitely one of the best schools that, is great at making your time there easier by offering services both online and offline.

In conclusion, it’s extremely obvious that Devry is becoming a great university to attend. For such reasons as specializing on technologically advanced students, to offering many services online, Devry is a great choice. With their advanced career placement plan, that is unbeatable, you really can’t go wrong. Devry should be a serious consideration in anyone’s choice of college.

Narrative: A Near Death Experience

We’ve all been in a situation when our parents want us to do something immediately. Something you’ve been putting off for a while, and they were finally enforcing their decision to make you do it. Well when my cousin’s dad told him to go get a tail light from a junk yard for the last time, he meant it. We called the junk yard and asked them for the specific part we needed. After a short time on hold, he said they have it and we could pick it up tomorrow. That was certainly not good enough, we needed it now! After telling him our predicament he was kind enough to offer us 20 minutes to get there. Little did he know that 20 minutes would cause the ride of our lives.

We jumped in the truck prepared to fly there to pick up the part. As we hopped on the highway, my cousin’s truck roared as it accelerated. He didn’t stop accelerating until 95-100 MPH. That in itself isn’t that dangerous, but how you handle the speed is everything. We were moving along quite fast, and it was looking like we’d be on time. There was no traffic, and it was a clear day with no impending reasons for us to slow down. A few miles after getting on, there was a car passing a semi. He was doing it so slow, and it seemed to be a little pointless. Meaning he was hardly going faster than the truck was. So we had one of two options; go around them or slow down. My cousin chose to drive on the shoulder, to pass them. That wasn’t all too dangerous. Was it rude, illegal, and inconsiderate? Yes. Was it terribly unsafe and a life threatening situation? No. We had our music blasting, and we’re just kids. We thought we were immortal. When it was our turn to get off the highway, we were all the way in the left lane. There was one person in the middle lane, which we needed to either pass or get behind to get off. Well from the other things we’ve done so far, it’s easy to assume which one of those options we chose. That was really pointless though because we had to slow down for the impending red light anyways. After the light we turned on to a curvy double yellow road. There was a red station wagon in front of us, doing the speed limit. That of course was too slow for my cousin. He jerked the wheel in to the opposite lane of traffic to pass the station wagon. Once we were next to him, and the engine was again screaming, we noticed a car not far from us in the same lane coming directly at us. My cousin just said one word and floored it. The station wagon (I assume) hit his breaks to let us proceed to pass him. We barley squeezed in to the lane we should have been in with inches to spare on each side of the vehicle. I honestly think if the station wagon didn’t slow down we could have been involved in a head on collision. Afterwards my cousin jokingly said he was in control the whole time, but didn’t want to brake because he had already accelerated to pass, and didn’t want to waste the gas. Pretty scary close encounter and a ride to the store I’ll never forget.

Looking back I’ve learned a few things. The first being always put on a seat belt when driving with other people. If you’re not in control, then it’s just not worth the risk. Secondly, getting yelled at is better than being in a head on collision. I won’t drive like a 90 year old grandma, but risks like those are completely unnecessary. Even a minor accident caused by stupidity results in a lot of hassles. Insurance goes up, you get tickets, and have to deal with the police. I’ll always think twice before driving like a NASCAR driver.
